I find a similar thread in the forum which I think can help you on the issue. Office for the web is free to use and you can access it in Safari, I think you can copy contents in the document to it, and back to Office for the Mac after repair the issue. And could you please share some screenshots on the grey out options and your Mac OS and Office Version?
